I almost got the impression that the author had an opportunity, a platform as a result of writing about a well known character, and maybe tried to use it to say something. Maybe this all speaks to someone else better than it did to me, but for in my case, it just didn't sit right. Again, trying too hard to get a message across by focusing on the wrong places to do it. I think too that, in getting caught up with what they were trying to say, the author forgot that Miles and Peter were in disguise a lot of time, between explaining facial expressions that neither of them should have been able to see while fully masked, to putting emphasis on Miles trying to figure out what it means to be "black Spider-Man" when again, while masked, this detail would have been absolutely irrelevant.

Perhaps a better way to normalize a female villain is to treat her as. Or as another example, every time a character finds out that the main villain is female, the reaction is always a bit pointed, like the reader would assume the character would fight the villain differently, if we weren't blatantly "reminded" otherwise.

The story got lost in trying too hard to be progressive in its messaging, to the point where the messages and attempted themes are over explained, and the reader isn't given enough credit to pick up on them on their own. It felt like someone trying too hard at conveying a message, rather than letting the nuances of the story do so instead. I hate when the story suffers as a result of it.
